Alabama inmate Casey White was recently handed a life sentence for his prison escape with his lover, corrections officer Vicky White. The escape triggered an 11-day multi-state manhunt, eventually leading to their capture.
During the sentencing hearing, White emphasized that Vicky, to whom he is not related, was the first person to genuinely care about him in years. He apologized to the court but refused to denigrate Vicky's name.
According to White, the couple sought a fresh start together. He proclaimed, "I can handle the truth because I know who I am. I chose this road. It’s cost me my life and freedom."
Prior to the escape, Casey was serving a 75-year sentence for multiple charges dating back to 2015, including attempted murder. He was awaiting a capital murder trial when he fled the Lauderdale County Jail in April 2022, facilitated by Vicky's position as the assistant director of corrections.
The manhunt came to an end when authorities discovered their car at a local motel in Evansville, Indiana. However, a brief chase ensued when the couple spotted the investigating officers. The chase concluded after police rammed their escape vehicle, prompting Vicky to fatally shoot herself, while Casey was apprehended.
In May, Casey pleaded guilty to the escape in exchange for dropping a felony murder charge in relation to Vicky’s death. He agreed to the maximum sentence of life without parole and consented to inform the state of any financial opportunities arising from the escape, as any proceeds would be used for his defense.
Currently, Casey White is still facing a capital murder trial for the 2015 slaying of Connie Ridgeway. The trial will take place on August 15 due to delays caused by his escape and the subsequent aftermath.
