Flash floods have violently struck various regions of Afghanistan over the past weekend, culminating in a chilling death count of at least 31, Afghan authorities reported on Sunday. Shafiullah Rahimi, the Taliban’s Ministry of Disaster Management spokesperson, presented these disturbing details during a press conference in Kabul, additionally revealing that 74 individuals are wounded, with a daunting 41 missing.
This calamity is credited to heavy seasonal rains, impacting seven provinces across Afghanistan. Consequently, the deadly deluge has either fully demolished or critically damaged 606 homes. An extensive amount of agriculturally vital land has also been devastated, as per Rahimi's report.
An alliance of various bodies, including ministries of defense and public welfare alongside the Red Crescent and provincial officials, conducted rescue operations at the flood-impacted sites. Their coordinated efforts underscored the nation's unified response to the disaster.
In an issued statement, the Taliban's Ministry of State for Disaster Management amplified the scale of the crisis. It stated that since the beginning of 2023, approximately 100,000 families in different provinces have been affected by nature's wrath. Fortunately, these families received essential food and financial aid. Additionally, the current flood-related deaths contribute to a somber figure - allegedly, natural disasters have claimed at least 214 lives over the last four months.
