In a thought-provoking conversation, Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera unveils his insights on leadership and shares how he deals with adversity on and off the football field.

With the buzz around the NFL season reaching fever pitch, the coach of the Washington Commanders, Ron Rivera, got candid in an interview that touched on varied aspects, from leadership to dealing with adversity. Since assuming charge in 2020, Rivera has navigated through a name change at the club, a personal cancer diagnosis, and a cultural shift within the organization.

When asked about his leadership philosophy, Rivera drew inspiration from illustrious figures like Nelson Mandela. Emphasizing the quality of leading by example, being committed, and making sacrifices, Rivera stated, "Be the leader that you would follow.”

In Rivera's words, focal areas for successful leadership rest upon the pillars of accountability, being focused on what's vital rather than what's intriguing, and keeping personal principles in check. Rivera fondly recalled key lessons on leadership he gleaned from his colleagues such as Andy Reid, the coach of Kansas City Chiefs, and John Madden, Rivera's mentor who highlighted the importance of setting clear standards and expectations.

Rivera shared that he often tells his players that they have control over their attitude, preparation, and effort, which he collectively labels as their inner APE. This concept helps him maintain the team's focus amidst various challenges and negative headlines that the club has faced in recent seasons.

Rivera, instated by previous owner, Dan Snyder, was tasked with bringing about a culture shift within the organization. When asked if a single individual can alter an organization's culture, he admitted it cannot be done alone and requires teamwork, making difficult decisions, commitment, and sacrifice.

He also took a moment to reflect on the changing role of professional athletes, where from steering clear of the limelight, they have now become active contributors to conversations around vital social issues. Rivera praised athletes like LeBron James and Megan Rapinoe for their active role in championing social issues and admitted that he feels privileged to have a platform where he can influence change, particularly in areas like cancer research and funding.

Amidst controversies like the NFL kneeling-flag issue, Rivera expressed his belief in American citizens' right to protest, emphasizing it's not intended to degrade national symbols but to expose societal inequalities and injustices. With this perspective, Rivera continues to forge ahead aiming at personal growth, understanding his players better, and leading his team to new heights of success.
