By Olivia Weaving October 18, 2023

Tragic tale of 11-year-old De’Evan McFall, a promising athlete, lost to gun violence, impactfully narrates the shattering of dreams and need for reforms.

De’Evan McFall, at the age of 11, carried a dream that screamed of prospects of landing in the NFL or NBA. Renowned amongst the league for his extraordinary talents, De’Evan was fast tracing his path towards sports stardom on account of his impressive athleticism and raw energy, Byron Sanders, the coach of De’Evan’s local team, the DeSoto Colts, reminisces.

Sadly, De’Evan's chance to fulfil his dreams was cruelly paused. On January 15th in Dallas, a stray bullet from a teenager’s firearm, following a fierce fight with De’Evan’s sister, killed the young athlete, informed De’Evan’s mother, Vashunte Settles. Police have charged a 14-year-old girl in connection with the murder.

In mere seconds, Settles joined the teeming list of parents rendered childless by gun violence in 2023. Firearms are now the leading cause of death for kids and young adults in the US since 2020.

Chasing his passion for sports and his love for rapping, De’Evan exuded an enthusiasm and affection that infected everyone around him. Settles remembers her son as a lovable and energetic child, capable of advocating for himself in the face of adversity, including homelessness and an ADHD diagnosis.

When athletics fees were beyond his family's means, De’Evan earned himself scholarships or waivers, demonstrating promise to the coaches willing to support him. "They really wanted him to play because of how good he was,” remembered Settles.

As team captain at the DeSoto Colts, De’Evan formed strong connections with his teammates and coaches, providing solace from obstacles beyond the field.

Sanders, recollecting the good times, revealed, “The other kids looked up to him,” owing to his leadership attributes and motivational spirit.

De’Evan’s godmother, Shay Govan, fondly remembered him as a quick learner, always keen on bettering himself, “He took it, soaked it in, and perfected it,” she said.

His dream of making it big was bigger than his personal ambitions; it also encompassed providing for his family.

Away from the pitch, De’Evan’s enthusiasm for rap, his love for creating TikTok dances, and his lively music discussions gave his friends several reasons to admire him.

Dubbed as a “great kid” by his mother, De’Evan is remembered for his protective spirit for his friends and his ability to forgive and seek apologies, painting a picture of a well-rounded and loved youngster.

Settles and Govan both fondly remember his deep affection for them, as he never missed an opportunity to express his love. His determination to stick with those he viewed as positive influences was a testament to his resilience and strength.

As Sanders summed it up, “He made the best out of his life.” Sadly, De’Evan's life was cut short far too soon, a heartbreaking reality that underscores the severity of gun violence in the US.
