The North Antelope Rochelle Mine in Campbell County, Wyoming, the largest coal mine in the United States, was struck by a tornado on Friday. At least eight people were injured during a shift change when the tornado hit around 6:20 p.m. MT, according to county government spokesperson Leslie Perkins.
Six of the injured individuals were hospitalized at Campbell County Health in stable condition. A statement from the hospital on Friday night indicated that all six patients were expected to be treated and released.
One person was transported to the Memorial Hospital of Converse County in Douglas for further care, while another refused medical treatment. In a statement, mine operator Peabody Energy Corporation confirmed that all employees were accounted for, and the facility had sustained damage.
The company has suspended operations until a full assessment of the damages can be conducted and measures to restart safe operations are implemented. County emergency officials have shut off power and gas to the mine for the time being.
The North Antelope Rochelle Mine holds the title of the highest-producing coal mine in the United States, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
