Former lawyer and convicted double-murderer Alex Murdaugh confessed to fabricating a story about a dog causing his housekeeper Gloria Satterfield's fatal fall in 2018 at the family's hunting property, Moselle. Murdaugh originally presented the incident as a tragic accident brought about by the pets. However, in recent legal filings, his defense team revealed that this was not the case. In reality, Murdaugh devised the false anecdote to pressure insurance companies into compensating Satterfield's family.

These revelations emerged during Nautilus Insurance Company's lawsuit against Murdaugh. The 63-year-old is accused of insurance fraud in connection with Satterfield's death. It's alleged that he appropriated $3.8 million in insurance payouts intended for the deceased woman's sons. Murdaugh had pledged to assist his housekeeper's family, even recommending one of his friends, ex-attorney Cory Fleming, as the executor of her estate. Fleming is also named in the ongoing fraud lawsuit.

In 2021, Murdaugh notified Satterfield's sons of an impending settlement, yet records indicate the insurance money had already been paid. Adding further intrigue to this case, Murdaugh is currently serving consecutive life sentences for the murder of his wife, Maggie, and his son, Paul, at the Moselle estate in June 2021. Despite his sentencing, he continues to profess his innocence, with his legal representatives appealing the conviction in March.
