Republican lawmakers in Florida recently passed legislation targeting diversity initiatives in colleges and restricting pronoun usage in educational settings. These bills were approved by the GOP-controlled House and Senate and are now awaiting the expected signature of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Gov. DeSantis is well-known for promoting a strict conservative agenda as he gears up to potentially announce his presidential campaign in the coming weeks, challenging former-President Donald Trump for the GOP nomination. Florida's current legislative session is characterized by DeSantis' Republican allies, who support his positions on issues such as sexual orientation, gender identity, race, and education.
The recently debated expansion of the controversial "Don't Say Gay" bill encompasses various restrictions, such as preventing school employees and students from being required to use preferred pronouns, as well as prohibiting instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation for students under the eighth grade. This bill also bolsters the ability to contest schoolbook selections, a matter DeSantis has fervently campaigned for in the past.
Many books deemed unacceptable by conservatives have already been removed due to DeSantis' efforts. Democratic state Sen. Tracie Davis expressed her concerns regarding the bills, stating that they unjustly discriminate against families who diverge from conventional norms. In response, Republican state Sen. Erin Grall argued that society's cultural war and sexualized agenda are causing confusion for children and depriving them of the opportunity to discover their true selves.
