Ghostwire: Tokyo, a standout game of 2022, initially released as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, has now made its way to Xbox Series X/S consoles. Although some minor graphical differences exist between the two platforms, the game's immersive story remains intact, paired with an engaging character progression system and inventive first-person shooter gameplay.
The arrival on Xbox coincides with new downloadable content, The Spider's Thread, providing additional gameplay and story elements. This creates the most comprehensive version of Ghostwire, delivering a richer tale than ever before. Players control Akito, a protagonist joined by a guiding spirit named KK, on a quest to reunite with his sister in an apocalyptic Japan. The vividly realized rendition of Tokyo, awash in rain and replete with shadows and lighting effects, is a highlight of Tango Gameworks' design.
Ghostwire's gameplay is a hybrid of shooter mechanics and spell-casting through intricate hand gestures, allowing Akito to fire projectiles and consume the essence of spirit enemies. Although innovative and entertaining, the controls occasionally feel sluggish, hampering the experience somewhat.
Despite these issues, the gameplay remains enjoyable, particularly with upgraded abilities. The Spider's Thread DLC integrates a mix of roguelite mechanics with Ghostwire's existing gameplay, offering a faster-paced and rewarding experience, and further enhancing the captivating story. Now available on Xbox, particularly through Game Pass, Ghostwire: Tokyo is undeniably a worthwhile gaming adventure.
