Ian Hamilton recently scored his first major league save in his 27th game, securing a 3-2 win for the Yankees over the Rays. Despite facing the bottom of Tampa Bay's lineup, Hamilton admitted feeling more adrenaline pitching in a save situation. The right-hander's achievement comes after overcoming significant hurdles, including a car accident and a line drive to the face, which disrupted his 2019 campaign.
Hamilton joined the Yankees as a non-roster invitee in spring training after stints with the White Sox and Twins, possessing a 4.91 ERA over 15 games. However, the 27-year-old has now earned a 1.42 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 12 games and 19 innings for the Yankees, following an impressive camp. Manager Aaron Boone appreciated Hamilton's 'business-like' demeanor and 'toughness,' while Hamilton attributed his success to maintaining a spring training-like regiment over the off-season.
A distinguishing aspect of Hamilton's performance is his unique 'slambio' pitch — a circle-change/slider hybrid which made him stand out in a bullpen affected by injuries to multiple high-leverage arms. With 3.1 scoreless innings pitched in three out of the last four games, Hamilton has earned Boone's confidence. However, it remains to be seen if he will have more chances to close. As for Hamilton, he expressed satisfaction in any role as long as the Yankees win.
