An NYPD lieutenant suffered a head injury in the early hours of Saturday when a hit-and-run driver swerved past a safety checkpoint in Manhattan. The lieutenant was part of a team stopping vehicles on the Inwood side of University Heights Bridge when a black Dodge Durango sped through the area. The vehicle's side-view mirror struck the lieutenant, causing him to fall onto the concrete. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the Durango driver fled the scene, heading toward the Bronx and avoiding capture. The officers had been conducting random checks on cars entering Manhattan, with the Durango moving in the opposite direction at the time of the incident.
